Baby love

I'm sitting in bed, typing this on my phone while I feed Dominic. It's midnight and he's awake for his first feeding of the night. I'm amazed at how fast he is growing and how we are growing together as a family. He smiles at us and mimics the sounds we make and we shower him with love and affection.

Looking back it's amazing to see how things have changed in the past year. I'll never forget seeing that positive pregnancy test and feeling shocked, scared and totally empty. I remember curling up in bed while Mark worked a night shift and willing myself not to cry. It wasn't that I didn't want kids, that was always the dream. It's just that I didn't think we were ready. Now can't be the right time, I told myself. And the tears spilled down my face and I felt like a terrible mother.

I tried my best to be brave and accept it and be excited, but I was terrified. It wasn't until a little over a week later that my feelings changed. I was bleeding and cramping and felt like I could be losing this life inside me before I'd even had a chance to love it. And, there, sitting in a hospital gown in the ER, I realized how desperately I wanted and needed this tiny baby. I held my breath while they prepped for my ultrasound and it seemed like time stopped when I saw that tiny flickering heartbeat.
Looking at that now, I can't believe that's the same boy I'm currently cradling in my arms. And looking at it back then, there's no way I could have anticipated the love and joy that tiny speck has brought to my life. I can't imagine how I ever lived without him and he is truly the best thing I've done in my entire life.

Dominic is back asleep now. I'm stealing a few extra snuggles before I lay him back in his bed and I'm thanking God for blessing me with this amazing boy.

Dominic's Nursery Tour

When we found out we were moving shortly after we learned we were expecting, I was both excited (to get out of South Dakota) and disappointed (that I wouldn't get to nest until after he was born). I could NOT wait to start his nursery when we arrived in Virginia. Of course, this was easier said than done. His room was stuffed full of boxes and boxes of our belongings and here I was 8 months pregnant. I unpacked what I could, left the heavy stuff for Mark, and did what I could to build his crib (Mark eventually had to step in and help). By the time Dominic was born, we had the crib up, but little else was done. So, then I had to work on trying to put a room together while caring for a newborn.

Thank goodness that newborns love to sleep! While Dominic would nap, I would race to his room to finish unpacking, figure out where things should go and plan what would go on his walls. The details for his nursery changed many times, but the overall concept was to make it Nautical/Beach themed to match our new home. The colors we went with were navy blue, bright green and aqua blue and I think they're perfectly matched for a baby boy! I love the way his nursery is coming together--it's very much still a work in progress, because really, is a room ever done?

Without further ado, I present: Dominic's Nursery.

This first part is between the door to his room and his closet (did I mention he has a walk-in closet...with an arched window? Lucky kid!). You may recognize the chalkboard we used for our (somewhat) weekly "bumpdates". The shelf was one we already owned and previously used to store dvds. Now it houses some of his books and there are baby accessories in the bins (hats, socks, shoes, sunglasses, etc.). The lamp is from Ikea that I got for Christmas years ago. The movers lost one of the legs of the lamp, so I had to cut a dowel rod down to size and paint it silver. You can't even tell unless you look really close! Much cheaper than buying a whole new lamp! The "Oh Buoy" print was a free printable from LostBumblebee Graphics in a Dollar Tree frame. The Virginia teether is a thoughtful gift from my dear friend Kelsey, the frame is from my friend Sara and the Chevron bin is from my friend Megan. Aren't friends amazing?! (The books also came from many of our good friends and family, but I'm not going to go through each one!)

This chair was purchased by Mark's friend here in Virginia. He and his wife are expecting their first baby in January and bought this chair from a thrift store and painted it white. Then they were given a brand new glider for their nursery and they no longer had a need for this chair--but we did! We gave them $15 for it...I'm calling that a steal! I found the pillow this weekend at Williamsburg Pottery for $12 and the adorable crab toy is from my bestie, Liz. Eventually, I'd like to at least add a seat cushion for the chair to make it more comfortable.

I bought this zig zag shelf years and years ago at Ikea and this is the first time it's actually made it up on a wall. I had to take off one "zag" to get it to fit where I wanted it, but it's up and that's what matters! I put some books here that are more geared towards being bedtime stories. If you went to my baby shower, you also might recognize the alphabet book colored by my friends and family and lovingly put together by Liz. The twinkle twinkle print is, again, a freebie from LostBumblebee Graphics. The frame was a plastic silver frame from the dollar tree that I painted, distressed and hot glued a starfish on to match our sea theme!

I love the simplicity of this section of the room. The canvases are ones I painted myself and I love the way they turned out. The D is a pine monogram that I got for $7 at AC Moore and stained myself. The amazing quilt was handmade from my close friend, Trisha (and it matches perfectly!) The anchor sheets are from my friend, Becky! Eventually, I'd like to add an area rug in front of the crib to add some visual interest and provide some softness to the floor--our carpet isn't really baby-friendly.

This is the part of the room I'm most proud of (besides the dresser that the movers destroyed--notice how it's caved in? Don't worry, we're replacing it as soon as we can, and I won't put Dominic on the changing pad until we do!). Starting from the top left, we have yet another free printable from LostBumblebee Graphics. To the right of that is a greeting card from Trader Joe's that cost 99 cents. It says "A ship in port is safe; but that is not what ships are built for." I loved how it matched the nautical theme as well as our colors scheme! Below that is a free print from the Oh So Lovely Blog. The D is for Dominic print was another freebie from thelittleumbrella.com (can you tell I LOVE free printables!?!). The last one is another card from TJ's. It has a fat fisherman saying "hi" and for some reason I thought it was cute and it made me laugh. All the frames are from the dollar store. I painted the one on the top left and the white in the middle. My favorite is the white one because it looks like distressed wood, but it's actually plastic! The bunting banner, I made for free! The crib sheets came in these fabric bags that match the sheets and I knew I was never going to use them, so I cut triangles out and used glue dots to attach them to a piece of twine. Cheap, simple and adorable! The frame on the dresser was on clearance at Kohl's and says "you sailed into our hearts". We filled it with his newborn photos and I think it adds a sentimental touch to the room. Oh, and see the adorable baby Sperry boat shoes? Thanks, Liz!

There you have it! Our nursery on a budget! There are still areas that are empty and need some help. When (or more realistically, if) I get it completely finished, I'll be sure to update!

38 Weeks

Week 38
How far along? 38 weeks, 2 days
Baby is the size of a: Pumpkin. Mmmmm I already want pumpkin everything.
Total weight gain: More than enough.
Maternity clothes?  My shirts aren’t really covering my whole belly anymore and there’s no way I’m buying more at this point
Stretch marks? I think I might have one on my left hip?
Sleep: I got up a few times last night, but I’m so tired that I always fall right back asleep after going to the bathroom.
Best moment this week: Seeing our baby on the ultrasound yesterday! He’s healthy and head down and ready to go!
Miss Anything? Not wondering if I’m going to pee myself right before I sneeze, being able to bend over to pick something up without triggering a BH, walking at a decent pace without waddling, wearing cute clothes, and of course, margaritas. Mama needs a drink.
Movement: He’s sleeping a lot through the day, but he must know when I start getting worried, because he’ll always give me some reassuring movement to make me feel better.
Food cravings: Pizza!
Anything making you queasy or sick: Still beef!
Gender:  Boy!
Labor Signs: A little cramping in my lower abdomen from time to time.
Symptoms: Back pain, pelvic pain, lightning crotch, reflux, sore feet, leg cramps, and IRRITABILITY. Dang it, hormones.
Belly Button in or out? In
Wedding rings on or off? Off.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy, but the slightest thing will make me mad or burst into tears. It’s really annoying.
Looking forward to: That moment when it’s finally time to go to the hospital. The suspense is killing me!

37 Weeks

Week 37
I’d apologize for being a slacker and skipping 36 weeks (and not taking bump day photos), but we have been so busy and haven’t had internet at our new place, so that’s my excuse. We’re still working on unpacking, cleaning and organizing and now I’ve started stocking our freezer with easy breakfasts and dinners, so things aren’t looking like they’re slowing down anytime soon. We set up the pack n play, the baby swing and the rock and play, washed baby clothes and blankets and the diaper bag and my hospital bag are packed and sitting by the door, so we’re nearly ready!

How far along? 37 weeks
Baby is the size of a: BABY! He’s now technically considered full term by most people. Anytime now!
Total weight gain: No clue and I don’t care.
Maternity clothes?  Yep
Stretch marks? We’re still doing ok!
Sleep: Not bad! Staying busy is making me tired at night, so I’m only getting up once or twice!
Best moment this week: Arriving in Virginia. Our new house is slowly being unpacked and coming together. It’ll be cute once it’s all finished…and I LOVE the location!
Miss Anything? Not having sore, swollen feet. My comfy shoes aren’t fitting me right now, so I have to wear flip flops all day, which isn’t good when I’m standing all the time.
Movement: He scared me a little yesterday because he didn’t move much, but no worries, he started beating me up again last night.
Food cravings: Baked goods. I want it all.
Anything making you queasy or sick: Still beef!
Gender:  Boy!
Labor Signs: Not sure it’s a labor sign or not, but oh man, lightning crotch HURTS!
Symptoms: See above lol. I terrified Mark the other night because I was in so much pain that I was crying and squeezing his hand really hard. He was ready to rush to the hospital.
Belly Button in or out? In
Wedding rings on or off? Off. Still wearing the imposter wedding ring. Boo.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy.

Looking forward to: My doctor’s appointment tomorrow! Ready to see how my boy is doing and if we’re progressing!

35 Weeks

Week 35
How far along? 35 weeks, 2 days
Baby is the size of a: coconut…coconuts are pretty small, but I’m assuming they’re referring to weight
Total weight gain: 28. Not cool.
Maternity clothes?  Yep
Stretch marks? Still in the clear.
Sleep: Sleeping just fine, except for getting up a few times to go potty and being incredibly sore when I wake up.
Best moment this week: We left South Dakota!
Miss Anything? Ordering a drink when we go out to eat. Mama needs a cocktail.
Movement: I was holding his brand new cousin, Anne, today and it felt like he kept trying to push her off my belly haha oh, cousin rivalry.
Food cravings: Cereal
Anything making you queasy or sick: Still beef!
Gender:  Boy!
Labor Signs: None.
Symptoms: My butt is still sore from our long drive, but other than that, my back and pelvis are feeling much better now that I’ve discovered that tart cherry juice helps with inflammation! It’s definitely helped.
Belly Button in or out? In
Wedding rings on or off? I think I lost my battle with the rings this week and I’m pretty sad about it. Had to buy a larger size ring from Kohl’s because I felt naked without a ring. I’d also rather not be judged by strangers for being pregnant without a ring on my finger.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy.
Looking forward to: Finishing the last leg of our journey and exploring our new home!

34 Weeks

Week 34
How far along? 34 weeks
Baby is the size of a: Cantelope
Total weight gain: 26…I’m officially my heaviest EVER and I’m not pleased
Maternity clothes?  Yep
Stretch marks? Still none. Let’s keep this up!
Sleep: Actually not doing too badly, but I’m sure that’ll change by tomorrow when I trade our memory foam king size bed for a queen air mattress. Moving while pregnant is FUN!
Best moment this week: Eating my Raider Philly from Philly Ted’s. Yes, food made it to my top moment. The rest of the week has been stressful and busy with getting ready for the move.
Miss Anything? Sleeping on my back and tummy. I’ve never been a side sleeper and I hate, hate, hate it.
Movement: Still a wiggly little guy
Food cravings: I want potato chips for some reason…
Anything making you queasy or sick: Still beef!
Gender:  Boy!
Labor Signs: None.
Symptoms: The pelvic pain is just getting worse and worse. I can’t stand it.
Belly Button in or out? In, and I think it will stay that way.
Wedding rings on or off? On!
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy.

Looking forward to: Leaving this crazy state forever on Monday and then getting to go home for a few days!

33 Weeks

Week 33
How far along? 33 weeks, 1 day
Baby is the size of a: Durian fruit? I honestly have NO idea what that is.
Total weight gain: Baby is supposedly gaining ½ a lb every week, so I’m going to assume I’m gaining about a pound.
Maternity clothes?  Yep. Some of my maternity shirts are actually getting a little snug. Uh-oh.
Stretch marks? I’m still lucky so far!
Sleep: I’m sleeping plenty, but I still feel SO TIRED all the time. I have no energy left.
Best moment this week: After a frightening episode where our lease and deposit check disappeared in the mail, it finally arrived in Virginia a week after it was supposed to, and we officially have a home to move into in just a few weeks.
Miss Anything? Waking up and going to bed without heartburn.
Movement: I think he’s been sleeping a lot, but when he moves, he REALLY moves.
Food cravings: I’ve been eating a lot of apples.
Anything making you queasy or sick: Still beef!
Gender:  Boy!
Labor Signs: None.
Symptoms: New this week: random pain on the lower right side of my back. Kinda a deep throbbing pain, rather than sharp, and definitely not my typical back pain. No idea what it could be.
Belly Button in or out? In, and I think it will stay that way.
Wedding rings on or off? On and I’m so grateful. I think I would go crazy if I couldn’t wear them.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy.

Looking forward to: Seeing my two guys together. I had a dream last night of Mark holding our baby boy and I just can’t wait to see it in real life!
